Monument MPM955 - Railway Level Crossing Gate

Gate from former dockyard railway adjacent to NE gate from Victoria Park. Built 1870/1900. [1]

Surviving section of gate and gate posts belonging to a level crossing to the dockyard railway line which formerly stood in Edinburgh Road. The railway line branched north from the track at Portsmouth and Southsea Station and followed the eastern edge of Victoria Park before running north-west along Flathouse Road (now Unicorn Road) and entering the dockyard on the western side of Unicorn Gate [2].

A plaque on the gate bears the following inscription:

'This gate and posts are relics of the dockyard railway link that used to pass over Edinburgh Road. The track was completed in 1846 and used until 1977. The line was dismantled during the 1980s to allow for landscaping along Unicorn Road'. [3]

The gate is situated on the south side of Bishop Crispin Way adjacent to the North-East entrance to Victoria Park.
