Listed Building: GREAT SALTERNS HOUSE AND ATTACHED WALLS (1387100)

House, now sporting club's offices. c1820. Stucco. Concealed flat roof with stuccoed stack at each end. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 5 bays. Horizontal rusticated ground floor, vermiculated at quoins and at junction with porch, rusticated quoins and centre part of first and second floors. At centre of main west facing front is a projecting porch approached by 2 curved stair flights each with 12 'Sedan' patterned steps and iron handrail leading to entry at first floor level which has a 2-leaf door, each leaf with moulded lower panel and glazed 4-pane upper panel with margin glazing set within recessed panel. Porch has flanking rusticated quoins, recessed panel on left and right returns each with a round-arched niche, cornice and block parapet. Ground floor has on far left a 9-pane unequal sash with margin glazing set under flat stuccoed arch, and to left and right of porch is a blinded window opening. On far right is a C20 door partially set within the original window opening. Band course at first floor level with on left and right of porch two 12-pane and margin glazed sashes each with moulded architrave and eared sill, recessed apron panel; each pair set within recessed panel, moulded band over broken at quoins and centre bay. On second floor to left and right of porch are two 9-pane and margin glazed unequal sashes each set under flat stuccoed arch with moulded architrave. Similar sash at centre with no architrave and set under flat voussoir arch, moulded band fascia and cornice with block parapet. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: flanking left and right are stuccoed 1-storey high screen walls, each with cornice and block parapet. Left screen wall has opening with fretted iron overlight and on right screen wall is a blinded opening, lower walls on right with opening set under stuccoed segmental arch. On right attached English band red brick boundary wall with a brick pierced opening and ornate patterned iron 2-leaf gate.
