Description
Includes: Eastney Barracks, Lumsden Memorial EASTNEY ESPLANADE. Memorial. c1918. Commemorates Brigadier General FW Lumsden, VC, d.1918. Ashlar. 2 steps with rounded centre on west and east sides, up to plinth which carries obelisk with cornice surmounted by pedestal and lion on crown. On one side of obelisk a bronze relief portrait of Lumsden, and on others commemorative plaques which record that Lumsden was awarded the Victoria Cross on 8 June 1917 for having brought in 6 captured enemy guns under heavy fire. The memorial was sited previously at the west end of the parade ground.
