Technique(s)
Date
2012
Organisation
Thames Valley Archaeological Services
Description
An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Thames Valley Archaeological Services during groundworks for the construction of three new residential properties on the site of 20 The Ridings, Hilsea, in 2012. Topsoil and demolition rubble was removed and the area reduced between 0.3m and 0.5m. The foundation trenches for the new buildings ranged between 0.45m and 1m wide, and 1m in depth below the reduced level of the site in the southern part, and 1.30m in the northern part.
Two chalk foundations were observed on the site. No dating evidence was found in association with these features, but they may date to before the early 19th century.
