Monument MPM1186 - Chalk Foundations, The Ridings
Summary

Type and Period (1)
Full Description
Two chalk foundations were observed during a watching brief on the site of 20 The Ridings in 2012. One foundation was on a northeast-southwest alignement, the other aligned northwest-southeast. They measured 0.63m wide and cut to a depth of 0.50m. The foundations were made up of irregular chalk lumps up to 0.15m across, and did not have any mortar or bonding agent. It was not possible to date these features, although the height at which they were revealed suggested they were not of great age. As the 19th century buildings in Hilsea are constructed from brick, rather than chalk, they may date to before the early-19th century.
