Event/Activity EPM120 - Archaeological Watching Brief at Bransbury Park, Milton, Portsmouth

An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Southampton Archaeology Unit in 2011 on groundworks for a new single storey building adjacent to Eastney Community Centre, Bransbury Park. The new building was to contain changing rooms, toilets and consulting rooms. The groundworks included level reductions, foundation trenches and service trenches. A total of five trenches measuring 2.1m deep and 0.7m wide were excavated. Historic maps showed that the site was situated within an area that had remained open land since the early 18th century, and there was the potential that evidence of early human occupation may have been preserved. No archaeological features were observed during the works. Large quantities of 19th-20th century china, glass, stoneware bottles, bricks and tiles appeared to suggest the area had been used for the disposal of rubbish during the Edwardian period.
