Find Spot MPM1188 - 19th-20th Century Landfill

Large quantity of late-19th/early-20th century domestic rubbish, probably relating to a Portsmouth Corporation rubbish tip. Recovered during a watching brief at Bransbury Park in 2011.

A large quantity of late 19th - early 20th century domestic rubbish was recovered during a watching brief at Bransbury Park in 2011. The majority of the material was contained within a layer of what had probably been a Portsmouth Corporation rubbish tip. The finds comprised many fragments of glass and stoneware bottles, china, bricks and tiles. Distinct deposits observed within the layer probably represented where individual cartloads of refuse had been dumped on the site.

A layer relating to the silting up of a creek shown on early maps, also contained fragments of 19th-20th century glass, china and clay pipe. This layer was directly below the rubbish tip, and the finds had probably intruded from the layer of refuse above. The finds included one complete 'Haywards Military Pickle' jar with rubber seal (this started to be manufactured in 1914), and half a plate marked 'W H Grindley, Melbourne' on the reverese, possibly dating to 1896.
