Event/Activity EPM134 - Portsdown Peak Excavation by South Hampshire Archaeological Rescue Group

Excavation carried out in 1980 by the South Hampshire Archaeology Rescue Group (SHARG) in order to investigate the area around a possible Roman signal station/look-out post on Portsdown Hill. The fieldwork was a follow-up to an excavation conducted on the site the previous year (1979), in which a pit containing post holes and Romano-British pottery was revealed, identified as possibly being a Roman signal station (see EPM133 & MPM1213). The aim of the 1980 excavation was to try and identify any buildings adjacent to the site. The fieldwork revealed the remains of a flint trackway of an unknown date. Roman pottery and fragments of animal bone were found embedded in the trackway.
