Monument MPM1218 - Flint Trackway, Portsdown Hill

The remains of a flint trackway were revealed during an excavation by the South Hampshire Archaeological Rescue Group in 1980. The trackway headed in a South-West North-East direction, and measured 27/37m in length (both figures are quoted in the report) and 2m in width. Ploughing had removed the top layer of flints, and in some places had destroyed the trackway completely. It was located 20m away from the site of a pit excavated in 1979, which had been interpreted as possibly relating to a Roman signal station (see MPM1213). Roman pottery and fragments of animal bone embedded in the trackway may have been dragged from the site as a result of ploughing.

It was not possible to ascertain the date of the trackway, but it is not shown on any maps of the area.
