Event/Activity EPM159 - Archaeological Watching Brief at Treadgold Industrial Heritage Museum

An archaeological watching brief was carried out during geotechnical investigations in the basement and ground floor of Treadgold Industrial Heritage Museum by Wessex Archaeology in 2010. The aims of the work were to gather further information relating to the construction of the foundations of a surviving property at the north-east corner of the museum premises, record any structural evidence of earlier buildings which occupied the same the site, and to record any archaeological features/finds present. A total of 9 geotechnical test pits were excavated by hand under constant archaeological monitoring, and the spoil checked for archaeological finds. Three of these were in the basement, six on the ground floor. The test pits ranged in size between 0.26m-1.29m wide, 0.34m-2.50m long, and 0.33m-1.43m deep. The watching brief revealed evidence of wall foundations which may relate to 18th century development of the site. The fact that the remains were relatively undisturbed, suggested that significant archaeological remains survive beneath the site. Accession number: 2014/292
