Monument MPM1272 - Wall Foundations, Treadgolds

Evidence of earlier wall foundations was revealed in several test pits in the former Treadgold's Ironmongers site (most recently 'Treadgold's Industrial Heritage Museum) in 2010. Although not fully understood, the foundations may relate to the 18th century development of the site.

The earliest part of the Treadgold's site comprises a group of what were originally early and later 18th century houses. The commercial premises were established in 1809, and enlarged during the 19th century, when an office, warehouse, stable yard, forge and workshop were constructed.

Further significant remains relating to the early development of the site are thought to survive beneath the current buildings.
