Event/Activity EPM160 - Building Assessment at 6 Admiralty Road, Portsmouth

A building assessment was carried out by Wessex Archaeology at 6 Admiralty Road on the 29th October 2003, in response to a proposal to demolish the property for a major redevelopment of the Historic Dockyard car park site. The property was originally a terraced house built c.1780, which had been incorporated into the Brickwoods Brewery site in 1946. At the time of the assessment the building provided toilet facilities for visitors to the historic dockyard, and was also being used as a retail outlet. The aim of the assessment was to provide an overview of the historical significance of the property, ascertain the amount of historical features surviving in context, and to give an indication of its overall structural condition. This information was used to inform decisions regarding the redevelopment scheme and the future of the building. The assessment concluded that the building retained its major structural condition and was generally upright and secure. Original features such as trim, joinery etc. had survived throughout. It was considered that the general condition of the property was such that it could be fully repaired and restored to its original late 18th century appearance. The building was thought to be an important survival of Georgian Portsea, having survived slum clearance in the 1930s, the blitz and post-war redevelopment. It was suggested that the property could be conserved and turned into a feature house demonstrating phases of domestic development in Portsmouth, or be used as accommodation. N.B.
