Event/Activity EPM172 - Archaeological Evaluation at the Camber, Portsmouth

An archaeological evaluation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology at land on the Camber prior to the construction of the Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) America’s Cup team base and headquarters. A total of two trial trenches were excavated by a JCB excavator using a toothless bucket, supervised by an archaeologist. The trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed new building and measured approximately 20m in length by 1.8m wide. Once the evaluation was completed the trenches were backfilled with the excavated material in the same statigraphic sequence in which they had been excavated. The only archaeological feature encountered on the site was a probable pit, the fill of which contained brick fragments. This was thought to date from the 20th century. Accession no: 2014/274
