Event/Activity EPM192 - Archaeological Building Recording at Buckingham and Felton Houses, 11 and 12 High Street, Portsmouth
Technique(s)
Date
2008
Organisation
Southampton City Council Archaeology Unit
Description
An archaeological building recording was carried at Buckingham and Felton Houses (11 & 12 High Street) by Southampton Archaeology Unit in August 2008. The survey was undertaken on behalf of Portsmouth City Council in response to a planning application for internal alterations to convert the houses into a hotel. A planning condition was imposed as both houses are listed buildings, Buckingham House being Grade II*, Felton House Grade II. The buildings also lie within an area of archaeological potetential covering the original medieval town of Portsmouth, and the Old Portsmouth Town Conservation Area.
The building recording included a photographic survey. An archaeological watching brief required as part of the planning consent for the building works did not take place, as the majority of the works had been completed by the time the watching brief was commissioned.
