Building MPM561 - FELTON HOUSE (NUMBER 12)

Three-storey neo-classical town house, circa late-17th or early-18th century. The house appears to have been built on an earlier basement. Mid-19th century range to the rear.

Three-storey, circa late-17th or early 18th century neo-classical town house. Originally detached from its neighbour Buckingham House (11 High Street). Possibly a speculative development with adjoining 13 High Street. The present house appears to have been built on an earlier basement, as the brickwork of the basement walls is different from that of the superstructure of the main building.

Further buildings and basements may originally have been located to the rear of the property, although this could not be confirmed due to later alterations. In the mid-19th century a new range was built to the rear of the house, against its northern property boundary. This consisted of a small three-storey structure to the west, and a longer two-storey structure to the east. It is not known whether this range acted as an extension to the main house, or was occupied separately.

2 houses. C18. No.12 of red brick in Flemish bond, No.13 stuccoed. Plain tile roof, half-hipped on right. Brick stack on left and at right to rear, rendered stack to right. 3 storeys and attic, No.12 has 1 large bay, No.13 has 2 bays. No.12 has door of 6 fielded panels on right with overlight, panelled reveals and soffit, fluted pilasters, and entablature with dentilled cornice. On left and on second floor 2 late C19 sashes, set under gauged brick flat arches. On first floor, C19 rectangular oriel window with central sash flanked by narrow sashes and some at sides, apron under, and console bracketed cornice. Stone coped parapet. 2 hipped dormers. No.13 has 3 sashes, set under flat arches to ground floor with flanking pilasters, frieze and cornice. C19 yard doorway on right with heavy console brackets to panelled entablature and pediment. 2 sashes on first and second floors set under flat arches. Brick-on-edge coped parapet. 2 hipped roof dormers. Entrance door on right return. INTERIOR not inspected. [2]
