Description

Observations were made by Portsmouth Museum Service during groundworks in preparation for a new housing development on the site of King James' Gate in 1988. The 17th century gate, a modification of the earlier 16th century Point Gate, had been demolished during the 1860s. A shipyard constructed on the site during the 20th century was demolished ahead of the redevelopment works. The building of shipyard workshops during the mid-20th century was found to have severely disturbed the remains of the gate, and very little of the lower foundations to the north-east demi-bastion had survived. However, the ground plan of the west demi-bastion of the 16th century Point Gate was revealed, and a section of the 17th century moat wall.
