Description
In March 1948 three Anglo-Saxon burials were discovered by workmen widening the junction at Southwick Hill Crossroads, Portsdown Hill. A fourth was uncovered by staff from Portsmouth Museum. The Ministry of Works were informed by Portsmouth Museum, and an exploratory excavation of the site was undertaken by museum staff and the Inspector of Ancient Monuments. Trenches were excavated in area approximately 50ft x 60ft in the north segment of the crossroads. This lead to the discovery of a further two Anglo-Saxon burials and two prehistoric cremations.
The junction at Southwick Hill Crossroads is now a roundabout where Portsdown Hill Road, Southwick Hill Road and James Callaghan Drive meet.
