Monument MPM1690 - Pit and food vessel, Southwick Hill Crossroads

The remains of a roughly rectangular pit containing a crushed food vessel, revealed during roadworks at Southwick Hill Crossroads in 1948. The pit consisted of a 'rectangle of grey filling' and appeared as an extension to the western end of an Anglo-Saxon grave. It was thought to represent a prehistoric burial which had been cut by a later Saxon burial. The food vessel was found lying on its side 1ft 5in below the ground surface.
