Event/Activity EPM209 - Archaeological Watching Brief at the National Museum of the Royal Navy

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Millward Davies at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard during February and March 2012. The watching brief involved monitoring work to locate buried services and determine the nature of the underlying geology within an area encompassing a section of road separating two 18th century storehouses, now used as museum galleries. The results of the investigation would be used to inform the design of a new link building to be constructed between the two galleries. A trench measuring 0.5m wide x 11.6m long and to a maximum depth of 1.3m was excavated by machine in order to locate the buried services. The geology was assessed using a borehole with a diameter of 250mm and 20m deep, the top 5m of which were monitored for archaeological remains.
