Monument MPM1741 - National Museum of the Royal Navy

Archaeological features observed during a watching brief in 2012, comprising a cobbled road surface, a brick structure (probably a soak-away) and deposits related to the building up of the ground level in the late-19th century and levelling of the site during the 18th century.

Archaeological features observed during two watching briefs in 2012 during preparation and groundworks for the construction of a new building linking two 18th century storehouses used as galleries for the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

The archaeology comprised: a cobbled road surface which appeared to have been re-laid in the mid-20th century; a late-19th century dump of cinder and rubble used to build up the ground level; a clay deposit which may have been related to the levelling of the site prior to the construction of the two storehouses between the 1760s and 1780s; a brick feature, probably a soak-away drain constructed from re-used bricks, which may date to the 20th century.
