Event/Activity EPM229 - Archaeological watching brief on excavation of three pits to investigate geophysical anomalies shown up on Ground Probing Radar Survey, Dry Dock No. 3

A watching brief was carried out by the Central Archaeology Service (English Heritage) on three trenches excavated within the perimeter of Dry Dock No. 3, Portsmouth Dockyard, between the 7th and 11th November 1991. The work was undertaken in connection with a proposed new Mary Rose ship hall. The trenches measured one metre square by one metre deep and were excavated in order to investigate anomalies previously identified during a Ground Probing Radar Survey (see EPM229). No features of archaeological note were present. Very recent concrete obstructions were recorded in all three trenches, two of which were thought likely to have caused anomalies shown on the geophysical survey. Accession No: 2001/268
