Event/Activity EPM61 - Archaeological watching brief at Vectis Way, Cosham, Hampshire

Watching brief undertaken in association with the construction of a residential complex of 11 flats at Vectis Way, Cosham. No archaeological features were observed during a soil strip to depths of 0.75m below the present ground surface. Until the 20th century the site appears to have been situated within farmland until, and was possibly once part of a medieval open field system. It would appear the site was occupied by a moderately large concrete building of commercial or industrial use, supported on large concrete piles, erected sometime between 1950 and 1971. It appears that the site was soil stripped during the buildings constructed, as no residual artefacts or archaeological soils of relevance were observed. There was little evidence for any surviving in situ archaeological deposits. No residual artefacts dating before the 20th century were seen in excavated soils. Accession number: 2002/13
