Monument MPM1028 - Modern Buildings, Vectis Way

Evidence of demolished buildings dating to the 1950s and 1960s found during an archaeological watching brief in Vectis Way. The area was used as farm land until the 20th century.

Evidence of demolished buildings dating to the 1950s and 1960s found during an archaeological watching brief in Vectis Way in 2002. The surface of the site was scattered with various materials that appear to have been made up of former modern surfacings. Sections were typically made up of a layer of broken up asphalt a few centimetres thick, followed by a shallow layer of sand and then a layer of gravel. A series of concrete piles, about one metre square and up to 2m deep, were scattered across the site. These were removed by machinery. Concrete slabs and blocks were found buried at various points, suggesting the ground had been disturbed in more recent years. No residual artefacts older than 20th century in date were seen in the excavated soils.
