Event/Activity EPM67 - An archaeological watching brief of St Mary's Glebeland, Church Road, Portsmouth

An archaeological watching brief was carried out by CKC Archaeology between 24th June and 21st July 2005 on land at the rear of the old vicarage to St Mary's Church, Portsea, during groundworks for a new development (Bill Sargent Crescent). The site had formed part of the vicarage garden and had probably been glebe (church) land since the medieval period. A total of four trenches were monitored during the works. Trench 1 was situated along the eastern end of the site on a north-south orientation and measured 25m long by 2m wide with an average depth of 1.5m. Trench 2 was situated within the northern end of the site on an east-west orientation and measured 6m long by 2.8m wide by 1.5m deep. Trench 3 was on a north-south orientation within the southern end of the site and measured 35m long by 1m wide by 1m deep. Trench 4 measured 10.7m long by 6m wide by 1.2m deep and was situated within the northern end of the site. The only archaeology observed during the watching brief were three pits recorded in trenches 1-3, suggesting the site may have been used for limited pit digging and rubbish disposal. A modern concrete slab was found in trench 4. Accession number: 2005/630
