Monument MPM1004 - Latrine Block (Building 1/94)

Latrine block (building 1/94) constructed between 1951-1962, which formerly stood in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The building was demolished due to the building of the new Mary Rose Museum.

The building was constructed between 1951 and 1962, replacing some earlier sheds built on the edge of Dry Dock No 3. A ramp and double doors were possibly added to the north elevation post 1962. A footprint of the building appears to be indicted on an Architect's plan of 1962 for proposals to alter Building 1/92, and it is also indicted as 'existing' on architects proposals dated 1970 to modernise Building 1/95. It is first shown on the 1977 Ordnance Survey map.

The building ceased to be used as a latrine at some point after 1962, although it retained much of its glazed white brickwork from the original construction, and marks and scars on the walls from toilet cisterns and cubicles were still visible.

At some point during the late 20th Century Room G01 to the west, had been subdivided to create a small room (G08). The toilets and partitions may have been removed at the same time, and the double doors added to the north face. As the building was used for storage there was no need for redecoration.
