Event/Activity EPM43 - Mary Rose New Museum Portsmouth Historic Dockyard: Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Buildings 1/91, 1/92, 1/93, 1/94, 1/95 Historic Building Recording

Historic building recording was carried out on five historic ancillary buildings surrounding Dry Dock No 3 at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. This was prior to demolition as part of a Heritage Lottery funded project to build a new museum to house the Mary Rose. The work was undertaken in order to preserve by record their character and relationships in the context of the historic development of the dockyard. Recording was undertaken in accordance with guidance produced by English Heritage and the Institute for Archaeologists on the following buildings: Building 1/91 The Trafalgar Building (a former working shed), to English Heritage Level 2 Building 1/92 Mary Rose Ship Hall (a former 'Destroyer's store'), English Heritage Level 2 Building 1/93 Mary Rose Trust stores (a former working shed), English Heritage Level 2 Building 1/94 Latrine Block, English Heritage Level 2 Building 1/95 Shower Block/shed (a former workshop), English Heritage Level 1 The survey, together with analysis of other evidence (particulary cartographic), indicated that the buildings were largely constructed between the late 19th and mid 20th centuries. They appear to have served ancillary funtions for the docks, in particular for storage of materials and maintenance work related to the repair of naval vessels. Several of the buildings were altered and adapted over time, as their use changed, mirroring developments in naval technology. The demolition of the buildings may reveal more historic elements of the dockyard either within or below them. Their clearance will make way for a purpose-built facility to accommodate the specific needs of the Mary Rose Trust. The association of the site to this important ship has been considered to outweigh the historic value of the current buildings.
