Find Spot MPM1008 - Plough marks and possible ploughed out barrows, Farlington Reservoir

An evaluation undertaken at Farlington Reservoir revealed one large feature on the extreme west of the site which contained a single sherd of late Iron Age/Romano-British pottery. The possible remains of half ploughed out barrows were observed at the southern limit of the site.

An evaluation was undertaken at Farlington Reservoir by Portsmouth Museum Service in 1991 on the site where the covered reservoir at the eastern end of the side now stands. There is very little information in the site archive, but presumably the evaluation was undertaken in advance of the building of this section of the reservoir. Notes scribbled on a sheet of paper recorded the following information (some of the writing was Illegible)

The site was overlain by ?deposited chalk. Below this boulder clay/decomposed chalk mix - solifluxion.

Plough marks at eastern end of site, otherwise no noticeable features.

One large feature was excavated on the extreme west of the site, which contained a fill of large flints underlain by a burnt layer. The fill was largely homogenous soil with few associated ? A single sherd of late Iron Age/Romano-British pottery was recovered, and charcoal samples were taken for C14 dating.

Two 2 metre adjacents were cut along the southern limit of the site, and revealed the possible remains of half ploughed out barrows, but there were few other features.

According to the 'archive' photos were taken and sections drawn, but 'weather appalling so results may be mediocre'.
