Monument MPM1117 - Outbuilding, Dock Mill

The remains of two substantial brick wall footings belonging to an outbuilding associated with the former 19th century Dock Mill, were observed during a watching brief in 2008. The building is shown on the 1870 Ordnance Survey map.

At the northern end of the site was a construction trench (13) containing an east-west aligned brick wall (1), the remains of which had survived to a height of twelve courses. The bricks were bonded with a hard, white, lime mortar, and measured 225mm by 105mm by 62mm. As it was positioned within the area of the building shown on the 1870 map, this was probably an internal wall.

A second construction trench (11), also containing an east-west aligned brick wall (7), was revealed further to the south. The wall was 450mm thick, and had been built from the same type of bricks and mortar as wall 1. It's construction trench had been backfilled with a dark soil fill. This was the southern external wall of the building.
