Monument MPM16 - Medieval Occupation Layer, Highbury Street

Intact medieval level consisting of a thick layer of grey-brown soil containing small sherds of 13th-14th century coarseware pitchers and cooking pots. The pottery was made from a sandy-textured earthenware fabric, presumed to have been manufactured locally.

The position of a small hearth was marked by a scorched area approximately 80cms in diameter.

The site is known as 'Highbury Street', although excavations took place in three areas on land between St. Thomas' Street and Highbury Street now occupied by housing centred on Hanover Court.

This record relates to medieval evidence from 'Area 1', located next to the southwest wall of No.88 St. Thomas' Street. Further evidence of medieval occupation was found in Areas 2 and 3, see records MPM1228 and MPM1229.
