Monument MPM1228 - Medieval Occupation, Highbury Street

Evidence of late-medieval occupation consisting of pits and depressions and a thin layer containing 13th-14th century coarseware found during excavations in 1975.

Pits and depressions found in this area during excavations in 1975, indicated that domestic occupation had taken place during the late medieval period. A thin spread of grey-brown soil contained several small sherds of locally-produced 13th-14th century coarseware, and a small burnt patch, possibly a hearth, was also revealed.

The site is known as 'Highbury Street', although excavations took place in three areas on land between St. Thomas' Street and Highbury Street now occupied by housing centred on Hanover Court.

This record relates to medieval evidence from 'Area 2'. Further evidence of medieval occupation was found in Areas 1 and 3, see records MPM16 and MPM1229.
