Monument MPM1678 - Former Moat Wall, west of Beeston's Bastion

The remains of a section of the moat wall to the former post-medieval town defences on the west side of Beeston's Bastion, revealed during excavations at Gunwharf in 1997.

The remains of several sections of the former moat wall to the post-medieval Portsmouth town defences were revealed during excavations at Gunwharf in 1997. This section of the moat wall would have been located on the west side of Beeston's Bastion, although no evidence of the latter had survived. The wall was observed 91cms below the modern ground surface. The facing stones had been robbed out to a depth of at 2.98m below modern ground level.

The town defences were demolished during the 1870s.
