Monument MPM1679 - Former Moat Wall, southwest of Beeston's Bastion

The remains of a section of the moat wall on the western side of the former post-medieval town defences, revealed during excavations at Gunwharf in 1997.

The remains of several sections of the former moat wall to the post-medieval Portsmouth town defences were revealed during excavations at Gunwharf in 1997. This section of the moat wall would have been located on the western side of the defences. It survived approximately 2.1m below the modern ground surface, but had been demolished above this level. The east face of the wall was situated 8m from the east face of the original New Gunwharf perimeter wall.

The town defences were demolished during the 1870s.
