Monument MPM1921 - Culvert, Gunwharf

A large brick culvert built during the 1890s was observed during a watching brief at Gunwharf Quays in 2002. The culvert was 'egg-shaped' and ran north-south. Its dimensions were not recorded, but were known from previous investigations to be 1.3m x 0.92. Three manholes were observed along the length of the culvert. These would have been in use until the late-20th century.

Part way along the main culvert was a branch culvert which ran west parallel to the northern face of the New Gunwharf Wall and exited below a slipway via a stone arch (see MPM). This would have emptied into the basin between the Old and New Gunwharf.
