Monument MPM2028 - Linear Features, Hedley House, Farlington

Two linear u-shaped features of unknown date, possibly field ditches, recorded during a watching brief at Hedley House, Farlington, in 1998. It was not possible to date the features, but the depth they were encountered below the ground surface and the fact they had been cut directly into the natural gravel was thought to suggest they were of a relatively early date.

The features were recorded in two separate test pits and were not thought to be part of one single feature. One feature was recorded 0.90m below the surface. It had a u-shaped profile and ran north-east to south-west across the trench. No finds were recovered from the fill. The second feature was recorded 1m below the surface. This was a linear cut with a steep u-shaped profile 0.8m deep running north-south. There was a thin layer of oyster shells at the top of the fill. No finds were recovered.
