Monument MPM2049 - Masonry wall, former Sainsburys car park, Commercial Road

The remains of a masonry wall were observed in a test pit in the former Sainsburys car park in Commercial Road during a watching brief in 2022. The wall was encountered in a void 1.1m below the ground surface which extended to 1.7m.

The date of the wall could not be established, but it was suggested that it may relate to the Royal Portsmouth Hospital, the National School (later called the Bell School) or 19th century terraces that previously occupied the site.

The point recorded for the location of the wall is approximate.
