Event/Activity EPM271 - Archaeological Watching Brief on Ground Investigation Works at City Centre North, Portsmouth
Technique(s)
Date
2022
Organisation
Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd
Description
An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Pre-Construct Archaeology on Ground Investigation works in the car park to the former Sainsburys in Commercial Road between the 29th and 31st March 2022. The site formed part of a proposed wider regeneration project in the north of the City Centre.
Monitoring took place on the mechanical excavation of five test pits 2m x 0.5m with an average depth of 2.5m. The only archaeology recorded was the remains of a brick wall and masonry wall observed in two of the pits. These features could not be comprehensively dated or recorded due to the depth at which they were situated and the limited extent of, and access to, the test pits. Due to the limited scope of the works it was not possible to establish the plan form of the masonry remains with any certainty, but it was thought likely to extend over much of the site.
The points for this record mark the approximate location of the test pits that were monitored.
