Full Description

A brick wall bonded in a concrete mortar was observed in a post-hole during a watching brief at Eastney Sewage Pumping Station in 2021. The wall was encountered below a 0.15m thick layer of concrete in a post-hole situated between the pumping sumps and Beam Engine House. This feature was thought to have probably represented one side of a culvert, possibly that marked on a map dated 1920 which appears to be linked to a new suction chamber situated to the north-east of the pumping sumps. The new chamber may have been constructed when the Gas Engine House was built in 1904.
