Event/Activity EPM278 - Archaeological Watching brief at Eastney Sewage Pumping Station

A watching brief was carried out by West Sussex Archaeology during the installation of railings and a security fence around the reservoir/cooling pond and pump house at Eastney Sewage Pumping Station on the 14th July and 10th August 2021. The work was undertaken as a condition of Scheduled Monument Consent. Archaeological monitoring took place during the excavation of ten post-holes along the line of new security fencing to the south of the cooling pond and two further post-holes to the east of the Boiler House. The post-holes ranged in size between c.0.25m-0.3m in diameter/square and were between 0.5m-0.8m deep. The deepest layer encountered was a clay silt containing fragments of brick and tile that was thought to be made-ground. This layer was capped by modern concrete. The excavations did not reach undisturbed geology. Archaeological features recorded during the watching brief comprised a probable water pipe and a brick wall, probably linked to a culvert.
