Find Spot MPM2081 - Hall’s stockless anchor, Portsmouth Harbour

Hall’s stockless anchor recovered by a crane barge in the approach to Portsmouth Harbour in 2016 during the Queen Elizabeth Class Capital Dredge Project.

Late 19th/early 20th century cast iron stockless anchor recovered from the eastern limit of Hamilton Bank in c. 10m of water while investigating an anomaly during dredging.

Hall’s stockless anchor was sanctioned by Lloyds in 1888. This example was possibly an improved version by Joseph Wright & Co. Ltd. The anomaly suggested there may have been a chain/cable associated with the anchor on the seabed. The anchor may have been lost or abandoned by a vessel.
