Event/Activity EPM288 - Queen Elizabeth Class Captial Dredge Project

Wessex Archaeology carried out quayside archaeological monitoring and recording of finds recovered as part of the Queen Elizabeth Class Capital Dredge Project at HER Majesty's Naval Base Portsmouth. Dredging took place within five zones in Portsmouth Harbour and the approaches to the harbour. During the dredging works finds of potential archaeological interest were reported to archaeologists using an on-board finds reporting protocol operated by Wessex Archaeology and then transferred to the quayside for assessment. The work was commissioned by Boskalis Westminster Limited (dredging contractor) on behalf of the Deference Infrastructure Organisation and took place between late October 2015 and June 2017. Over 1000 objects were recorded during the monitoring of the works. The quayside monitoring took place at Flathouse Quay and therefore a point has been recorded at an estimated location. The polygon recorded for this event relates to the area covered by the dredging works taken from a GIS file. Monument Records have been created and linked to this event recording find spots for more significant objects where a location (NGR) has been supplied. However, there were a large number of finds for which the location was not known and these have therefore not been recorded on the HER.
