Find Spot MPM2082 - Ship timber, Portsmouth Harbour

Single timber from a ship measuring 3.41m long by 0.175m wide and 0.125m in depth. The timber had possible scarf joints and tool marks. It was fastened with treenails. See Wessex Archaeology report for full description.

The timber was stray and was not associated with other material on the seabed. It is possible that it was lost at sea in an accident that may or may not have caused a vessel to sink and then floated to its current position, or it could have redeposited from a nearby wreck by the action of tide and currents.

The date of the timber is not known but it was thought unlikely to be more recent than 1910. A sample was taken for dendrochronology.
