Find Spot MPM2117 - Worked timbers, Portsmouth Harbour

Three worked timbers fixed by treenails and partially coated in lead and copper sheathing recovered from Portsmouth Harbour in 2017 during the Queen Elizabeth Class Capital Dredge Project. Possibly a section of ship's timber.

Three worked timbers fixed together by treenails and partially coated in lead and copper sheathing, recovered during pre-dredge clearance in Portsmouth Harbour. The total length of the timbers joined together was 2860mm long by 390mm wide. It was not possible to identify what function the timber served or what it had belonged to. The use of large treenails, copper fastenings and sheathing suggested that it may have been a section of ship's timber although there was not enough evidence to confirm this. This was an isolated find and there was no evidence of a shipwreck and no other ship structure was recovered from the location. It was concluded that the timber had probably been discarded.
