Find Spot MPM2088 - HMS Ganges plaque, Portsmouth Harbour

Insignia for HMS Ganges recovered by grab at the quay side during dredging in Portsmouth Harbour. Metal alloy diamond shaped plaque with an elephant in the centre measuring 480mm high by 450mm wide. A crest at the top depicts the stern castle and the port and starboard views of the ship separated by two main sails. Beneath this is the word 'GANGES'. The plaque is thought to date to between 1865 and 1976. The object is held by Portsmouth Museum Service under the accession number 2015/462.

The National Maritime Museum hold a similar (smaller) example as part of a collection of ship's badges ID:AAA1218.
