Building MPM31 - 3 Battery Row

Mid-terrace house with 17th century origins, although the vast majority of the building dates to post-1750, and there have been many modern alterations. The house is on three floors and is one room deep. There is a modern kitchen annexe at ground floor level. Two mid-18th century style red-brick fire places remain largely intect on the ground and first floors.

An internal inspection during renovation work in 1989 revealed evidence of an earlier mid-17th century building. A large section of oak timber framing with red-brick infill panels was observed in the rear wall on the ground floor of the present building. The inner face of the wall had been clad with weather-boarding. This wall was interpreted as the front wall of a 17th century building. After an entirely new section was added to the house sometime after 1750, the front wall had become the rear wall of this newer property. It is probable that the weather-boarding would have been hidden by panelling, although any evidence had been removed by more recent modifications to the property.
