Full Description
St John's Catholic Cathedral is the Mother Church to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth. The Cathedral was opened in 1882 to replace a much smaller Chapel in Prince George Street built in 1796. Originally designed by John Crawley, and later modified by Joseph Hansom and Canon Alexander Scoles, the building was completed in four phases between 1882 and 1906. The Cathedral was badly damaged during an air raid in 1941, and restored in 1950.
