Building MPM718 - EMMANUEL EMMANUEL MEMORIAL DRINKING FOUNTAIN, CANOE LAKE GARDENS

Monument to Alderman Emanuel Emanuel (Mayor of Portsmouth 1866-67), in the form of a drinking fountain surmounted by an angel and canopy. Presented to the City in 1893.

Monument to Alderman Emanuel Emanuel (Mayor of Portsmouth 1866-67), consisting of a stone (polished granite) drinking fountain surmounted by a bronze angel of peace and elaborate cast-iron canopy with four columns. [1]The fountain was presented to the City by Alderman Emanuel's son and daughter, Barrow Emanuel and Lady Magnus, in 1893. It originally stood further west on a small piece of land separating St Helen's Road and the Esplanade (approx. NGR SZ652981), roughly opposite St Helens Mansions. [2] The fountain was moved to its present location at the western end of Canoe Lake in c1934 when the road layout was changed [3].

The inscription on the fountain reads:

'IN MEMORY OF EMANUEL EMANUEL, ALDERMAN, J.P.
WHO WAS MAYOR OF PORTSMOUTH 1866-67

THIS FOUNTAIN WAS GIVEN TO THE PEOPLE OF PORTSMOUTH
BY HIS SON AND DAUGHTER
BARROW EMANUEL AND LADY MAGNUS

ALDN. R. BARNES, MAYOR 1898'
