Type and Period (1)
Full Description
A trench was excavated to examine the infill of the moat close to the face of the East Ravelin during an archaeological evaluation in Ravelin Park in 1972. This was made up of a layer of 19th century backfill (clay-soil and gravel), a silty deposit containing organic material, and a clay base. The infill had been tipped into the moat from the ravelin.
The East Ravelin (see MPM34) formed part of the remodelled 18th century Portsmouth town defences designed by Desmaretz, and was demolished c1860s/1870s.
