Full Description
A trench was excavated to examine the infill of the moat to the former town defences near the apex of the East Ravelin during an archaeological evaluation in Ravelin Park in 1972. The fill consisted of a layer of 19th century backfill (clay-soil and gravel), and a silty deposit containing organic material. A maximum depth of 4.5m was reached at the centre of the moat. Some fallen masonry was present at the north end of the trench.
The East Ravelin (MPM34) formed part of the remodelled 18th century Portsmouth town defences , and was demolished 1860s/1870s.
