Monument MPM2031 - Boundary wall footings, Eastney Pumping Station

Section of brick footing to the boundary wall of the Victorian sewage pumping station at Eastney exposed during an archaeological watching brief in 2020.

The brick footing to the boundary wall of the Victorian sewage works at Eastney were recorded during an archaeological watching brief at Eastney Wastewater Pumping Station in 2020. The upper part of the wall footing was encountered during ground reduction works for new vehicular access at the site. This was a maximum of 0.38m wide and had been constructed using both frogged and unfrogged red bricks bonded with a hard grey cement mortar. A second section of the wall footing was observed in a pit excavated for the installation of a new gate post. This consisted of eight courses of brick which extended to the base of the pit (c.1m deep). The lower part of the footing was left in situ.

The section of wall observed during the watching brief appears to have been demolished during the second half of the 20th century. Part of the same boundary wall still survives in situ further towards the Henderson Road frontage of the site. The wall does not appear to pre-date the sewage works that were constructed in the 1860s.
